Equine Groups

Leg Up Farm is proud to offer a variety of equine group opportunities in 2024. Leg Up Farm’s team, including a mental health professional and certified equine specialist use an evidence-based treatment model to facilitate Equine Assisted Psychotherapy in groups.

  • There is no cost to attend Veterans PTSD groups

  • All other groups cost $175 per participant

  • No refunds will be issued after payment

Social Skills

  • Participants will work with Leg Up Farm’s horses to observe body language and communication strategies, while engaging in peer interactions through group activities and games that focus on teamwork and being part of a herd.

  • Group meets from 9:30-11:30 am on the following dates:

    • June 5, 2024

    • June 12, 2024

    • June 19, 2024

    • June 26, 2024

    • Ages 12-15

    • All activities are unmounted and do not require equine experience

    • 30 minutes education

    • 15 minute break

    • 75 minutes with horses

    • Participants should bring a drink and snack

4 weeks beginning June 5, 2024

Horse Powered Reading

  • Experiential Learning which focuses on the learning process. Participants interact with horses from the ground, while using toys and props to develop reading or math skills.

    During sessions participants are given the opportunity to:

    • Improve understanding by identifying stumbling blocks.

    • Experience movement while learning, which anchors memory retention and recall.

    • Connect with horses, volunteers, and other learners which allows for new social relationships

    • Reflect on what they are experiencing to create new patterns of learning.

    Horse Powered Reading or Math Goals:

    • Build phonetic awareness and word recognition

    • Overcome barriers that block comprehension

    • Use critical and creative thinking

    Group is facilitated by an equine specialist with a background in education.

  • Group meets from 9:30-11:30 am on the following dates:

    • June 11, 2024

    • June 18, 2024

    • June 25, 2024

    • July 2, 2024

    • Students who have completed 1st-5th grades

    • All activities are unmounted and do not require equine experience

    • Participants should bring a drink and snack

4 weeks beginning June 11

  • Participants will learn ways to manage anxiety through self-care and mindfulness activities, while working with Leg Up Farm’s horses. Classroom time will be utilized to address anxiety skills, provide homework for families, and offer opportunities for connection between those who experience anxiety.

  • Group meets from 9:30-11:30 am on the following dates:

    • July 10, 2024

    • July 17, 2024

    • July 24, 2024

    • July 31, 2024

    • Ages 12-15

    • All activities are unmounted and do not require equine experience

    • 30 minutes education

    • 15 minute break

    • 75 minutes with horses

Taming Anxiety

Horse Powered Math

  • The purpose of this group is to encourage teamwork skills and increase confidence. Participants will work with Leg Up Farm’s horses in groups to identify communication challenges, engage in appropriate communication, and work on building assertiveness skills.

  • Group meets from 5:30-7:30 pm on the following dates:

    • August 7, 2024

    • August 14, 2024

    • August 21, 2024

    • August 28, 2024

    • Ages 12-15

    • All activities are unmounted and do not require equine experience

    • 30 minutes education

    • 15 minute break

Corralling Confidence

Veteran PTSD Group

Fall Group

6 meeting dates beginning September 18, 2024

  • During group sessions, participants will work with equine partners to foster an emotional bond, connection, and trust with their horse. Participants will have opportunities to become more in-tune with their emotions and reactions, as well as work to develop confidence, self-esteem, and safe emotional connections.

  • Group meets from 5:30-7:30 pm on the following dates:

    • September 18, 2024

    • September 25, 2024

    • October 2, 2024

    • October 9, 2024

    • October 16, 2024

    • October 23, 2024

    • Open to York County veterans only

    • Must be a new client to Leg Up Farm

    • All activities are unmounted and do not require equine experience


Other Equine Groups

  • Equine-Assisted Learning is an experiential learning approach that promotes the development of life skills for educational, professional and personal goals through equine interactions. This is suitable for individuals and groups such as school groups, sports teams, clubs, workplace and leadership teams.

    Leg Up Farm’s Equine-Assisted Learning program does not include mounted activities.

  • Leg Up Farm’s arena is available to rent for individual one-time use or a monthly membership.

Arena Rental

  • Community members (age 14+) are invited to join us on the first Monday of every month from 6-7 pm for Horses & Hot Chocolate. Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, meet our horses, and learn about volunteer opportunities. There is no cost to attend.

  • Veterans and first responders are invited to join us on the first Wednesday of every month from 5:30-6:30 pm. Meet our horses and learn about Leg Up Farm’s equine program. There is no cost to attend.

  • Spouses and partners of veterans are invited to join us on February 9 from 5:30-7 pm for a Get Happy Hour. Participants will work with our horses to learn how to care for themselves while they are caring for others.

Meet & Greets

  • Leg Up Farm is an ideal setting for field trips for students with special needs or scouts who need to earn a farm/horse/helping badge. Leg Up Farm’s riding instructors provide engaging activities tailored to the students’ needs. Students participate in activities that may include grooming, tacking and feeding a horse, leading a horse through an obstacle course.

    Field trips and scout groups are limited to 15 students. Classes may utilize Leg Up Farm’s picnic area and playground while visiting. Riding is not included.
