Meet the Herd

The horses in our equine program are valuable members of our team. They receive a high level of care from Leg Up Farm’s equine staff and other equine professionals.

Aria

Aurora is a playful, energetic, and curious youngster! While she is too young to participate in mounted activities, she is often found working in EAP sessions. Aurora would like to be a show hunter pony when she grows up. But for now, she will continue to enjoy all the nose kisses and peppermints she can get from everyone she works with.

Duke

Duke is a Dutch Harness horse and Quarter horse cross. While he is not new to teaching lessons, Duke spent most of his life hitting the trails. Around the farm, you might find Duke begging for cuddles and treats. A fun fact about Duke is that he loves frankincense and will try to eat the essential oil bottles!

Kreature

Kreature came to the Leg Up Farm herd by happenstance, when staff members were looking for a small equine for EAP. Different from horses, mules have the ability to remember, and recall and worry about things that they have experienced. This helps Kreature relate to EAP clients.

Bella

Bella arrived at Leg Up Farm after spending years as a lesson horse at a private boarding school. She works with our intermediate riders, helping them to gain confidence in canter and growing their riding skills over jumps. When visiting the barn, you will often find Bella’s head hanging into the isle, waiting to receive snuggles and love.

Leo

Leo is an OTTB (off the track thoroughbred) who just did not have the need for speed, despite being a relative of Secretariat. Leo is a mellow guy, who loves snuggles and attention. He works mainly as part of the therapeutic horsemanship herd but also participates in EAP sessions with clients.

Buzz

Buzz’s past life consisted of being a carousel pony where he worked A LOT, but that life was no longer for him. Buzz is care-free, silly, and likes to play games with staff. He has an important job to be Kreature's confident friend, to show him what is is like to be a horse, how to be brave, but also he gets to work on being himself.

Opal

Opal came to our program by way of Bonded by Strength Horse Rescue. Not much is known about her history other than that she was an Amish work horse. Despite a difficult past, Opal has maintained a sweet and gentle nature. Having this gentle giant in our herd allows us to accommodate taller and adult riders.

Ringo

Ringo arrived at Leg Up Farm after being found at New Holland Horse Auction by our equine team. With time, a gentle touch and being shown kindness, Ringo’s sweet and gentle personality has shown through. Ringo enjoys playing with his pasture mates, Buzz and Ringo or helping riders with physical limitations build strength and confidence in the saddle.

Phoenix

Phoenix is a full-size Equestrian Riding Simulator. Phoenix helps instructors make learning safe and fun for riders as they master new skills. Riders to get play with Phoenix in a temperature controlled environment. Phoenix loves long walks on the beach, visiting the zoo, and being a dressage horse. Leg Up Farm is one of the only facilities in the country to have a horse like Phoenix.

Sam

Sam is the official greeter of the barn – giving attention and kisses to everyone who enters the barn. He’s also the barn’s class clown—rearranging obstacles in the arena and blowing raspberries with his lips when he’s bored. His interactive personality and smooth gaits make him good choice to help develop confidence in his riders.

Millie

Not a horse, obviously, but part of the herd regardless.

Sully

Sully migrated South from just outside New York City, bringing with him a huge personality. Sully sports a mohawk and has a stripe down his back (called a dorsal stripe) that runs from his ears to his tail. When he isn't working with clients, you will find him snuggling passers-by, swindling treats from volunteers or playing with his buddy Sam out in the pasture.

Wild Night

Wild Night is the granddaughter of Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, but did not have a successful racing career like her grandfather. Since arriving at Leg Up Farm, Wild Night has been an active member of our team of EAP horses. Also, she is currently undergoing training to one day help our clients in mounted activities.
