The Courage to Dream

More than 20 years ago Louie and Laurie Castriota set out to create a therapeutic riding center, merging their love of horses with their desire to give back to their community.

Six months into planning, their daughter Brooke was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease, causing cognitive and motor function delays.

Through their experience of trying to find the best treatment for Brooke, the Castriotas realized the need for a comprehensive therapy center which provided coordinated therapy services that are both affordable and accessible for children with special needs. Louie and Laurie seized the opportunity to expand on their initial plan. After many years of hard work, and thanks to the generosity of community members, Leg Up Farm opened its doors in April 2010.

Since opening, Leg Up Farm has provided services for more than 3,000 individuals with special needs.

Louie and Laurie’s story has been captured in a book, Leg Up: The Courage to Dream, which is available to purchase on Amazon.
